Favorite Books of Celebrities

by on April 14, 2010

What’s your favorite book?

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird is loved by many celebrities, including Alec Baldwin, Whoopie Goldberg, Kathy Bates, and Hilary Swank.

The great series, The Chronicles of Narnia, is also beloved by celebs like Nicole Kidman, Christina Ricci, and Colin Powell. I can’t wait to read these books to my kids as well.

Maybe you like The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Catherine Zeta Jones, Anthony Hopkins, and Ben Stein call it their favorite. The roaring 20′s come alive with Fitzgerald’s writing.

I bet you would never guess which books are shared favorites for Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. I’m sure that JK Rowling would be pleased. How could anyone spend so much time devoted to these books without loving them?

I was a little surprised to see Kim by Rudyard Kipling favorited by a few celebs including Joni Mitchell, Deepak Chopra, and Ursula K. Le Guin. I hadn’t heard a lot of praise for the book before I started researching for this article.

However, I wasn’t surprised to see David Copperfield chose David Copperfield. I’m assuming that’s where he found his stage name. His real name is David Seth Kotkin.

Angelina Jolie confessed her love for Vlad the Impaler, while Natalie Portman recommends The Diary of Anne Frank. Russel Crowe says that he’ll read anything by Studs Terkel, but Mel Gibson likes Fahrenheit 451. Bill Gates and Winona Ryder both agreed on The Catcher in the Rye.

Celebrities that are more popular today also voiced their opinions about books. Robert Pattinson likes poems by Baudelaire, which should make all the teen girls swoon. Miley Cyrus enjoys Don’t Die, My Love by Lurlene McDaniel. Johnny Depp likes Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Our president, Barrack Obama, mentioned Netherland and Oprah Winfrey has a book club, but Their Eyes Were Watching God is her favorite.

For me, I usually like a good dystopia, but I’m no celebrity. Some of my favorites include The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, or 1984 by George Orwell. The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins probably shouldn’t be included with the likes of Orwell and Bradbury, but they’ve recently become some of my favorites as well.

Listing my favorite books is like listing my favorite movies or songs. My mood, attitude, and current surroundings are definite contributing factors. Depending on those factors, I might not mention dystopia books as my favorites. I may tell you that Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk or American Gods by Neil Gaiman is my favorite. On top of those, I think Stephen King is a master. I especially liked his Dark Tower series.

Sometimes I’m not into fiction. Often, I need a good business book, like Good to Great by Jim Collins, Freakonomics by Steven Levitt, or anything by Seth Godin. Right now I’m reading more about Norse Myths from Kevin Crossley-Holland. The Power of Nice by Linda Kaplan Thaler is another non-fiction that I’d recommend to anyone.

So, let’s go back to my original question. What’s your favorite book? I’m sure that someone must love the Lord of the Rings trilogy or maybe even that series I’ll never read by Stephenie Meyer. Stephen King doesn’t seem to care much for her, but he loves to read The Lord of the Flies. Is that your favorite book too?
